Pinterest gains social marketing appeal, named one of the top U.S. websites

Pinterst has become an increasingly popular website in the last few months with traffic records falling every month.

Experian Hitwise used its Twitter account on Monday to announce that social network Pinterest has become a top 30 website in the United States. The photo- and link-sharing platform totaled more than 103 million website visits in February, which was a 36 percent increase from January.

According to Hitwise, pageviews also rose substantially in February reaching 21 percent more than in January. This might be a good sign for the businesses who have already added Pinterest boards to their social media marketing mix.

A separate report from Shareaholic demonstrates Pinterest's recent successes, finding that it drove more traffic in February than Bing, Google+ or Twitter.

According to Janet Aronica of Shareaholic, this is not as surprising as some may think due to Pinterest's status as a link-sharing website. Sharing content is the primary activity fueling the network. Regardless, 1.05 percent of all website visits on the web came from users clicking links on Pinterest.

Moving forward, the growth and popularity of Pinterest positions it to be a competitive must for social marketing campaigns. Despite all of this success, Pinterest is still invite-only. When it finally becomes open to general public, it's expansion is likely to continue, perhaps at an even greater pace.

Advancing social campaigns is likely to be a trend this year with more businesses looking to improve their use of the channel. Brafton recently reported that companies expect social media marketing to account for more than 19 percent of their total marketing investments in the next five years.
