Internet marketing news roundup, May 4

Bing rolled out new-look SERPs this week that could attract some users unhappy with recent Google adjustments.

In recent weeks, Google has stolen the headlines with a series of announcements regarding its search algorithm. While the company released news of yet another minor update, Bing took the top spot in content marketing news for the first week of May with a complete redesign of its SERP. In its blog, Bing detailed the adjustments aimed at simplifying the search results page. The resemblance between the new Bing SERPs and old Google SERPs seems to indicate a desire to bring search back a less complicated time. Bing has stripped a lot of the bells and whistles from its pages. Brafton reported that the company found that believes a lot of recent additions to Bing search, as well as other engines, have been viewed negatively by consumers. Photos, maps and relevant video content will still appear on its search results. However, excessive social data is all kept in one designated area to avoid overwhelming users. Page layout also changed with the new Bing SERPs. Related searches shifted from the top left of the page to the bottom right, while local, image and other search options move to the top in a tabbed format rather than links on the left side. Bing said that it made these moves to make above the fold content more applicable to search results. Bing's new search result layout is in stark contract to Google SERPs, which heavily feature data from Google+ and include long lists of links to search filters alongside top results. Bing says minor algorithmic changes accompany the new SERPs. Google, meanwhile, received some attention for a clandestine roll out of Panda 3.6. On Thursday, Brafton reported that a Panda update hit on April 27, while most were focusing on the recent Penguin algorithm. Search Engine Land first reported the minor adjustment, which was the third in an eight-day span for Google. Panda 3.5 hit the web on April 19, while the initial Penguin algorithm struck on April 24. Like most Google Panda updates in 2012, the latest iteration had minimal effect and appeared to be another minor data refresh. While most are waiting for one major update to come, there's no timetable for the next Panda roll out with widespread effects. SEO campaigns are being analyzed and processed by companies everywhere. However, all Google updates will likely have to do with site quality moving forward. Those with high-quality content that fosters a strong user experience are best positioned to maintain and build search visibility. For companies hoping to analyze their keyword research more effectively, Google may have provided some help this week when it expanded query data in Google Analytics. As Brafton reported on Tuesday, marketers can now look at search queries that resulted in pageviews dating back 90 days rather than the previous setting of 35. On its Webmaster Central blog, Google said that it has also adjusted its analytics suite to include data from the top 2,000 queries companies see hits from. While many will still see far fewer results keyword not provided, those with widespread search traffic will have greater access to the queries they are ranking on. Businesses with content marketing campaigns in place and those hoping for a spot in Google News received some nvaluable insights as well this week with Google's adjustments to page layout and freshness. Brafton reported that real-time updates will be a major focus of the Google News moving forward. Bringing the recently published articles and information related to a topic will help users for obvious reasons. Marketers can leverage the adjustment by publishing original, relevant content to their website that ties current events or an otherwise trending news topic to their brands. News content marketing campaigns can be especially valuable for businesses hoping boost their web presence, as a Pew poll demonstrated news content is among the most popular types accessed on the web. Brafton reported that 61 percent of respondents to the survey said that they access news content on daily basis. Many of these users access articles on multiple devices, further demonstrating the value of a strategy that targets desktop searchers as well as those using tablets and smartphones. As mobile web use becomes increasingly common and the devices more capable, the value of a mobile SEO strategy will only grow. Moreover, a frequently updated news content marketing campaign helps target the growing user base that has constant access to web updates. A separate study from AYTM Market Research, further illustrated the role news content can play in marketing for a company. Sixty-six percent of respondents said they access news content and 51.8 percent said they read blog content every day. The value of content marketing is clear when these figures are compared to just 16 percent who pay attention to online display ads. The week's headlines also illustrate the power of news and other forms of updated website content as social fodder. Twitter announced this week that it has changed its Discover tool to focus more on content popular within a user's timeline rather than content trending throughout the site. This will likely make social media marketing more effective, as it could help companies reach more relevant users when branded content is shared by followers. Brafton highlighted one specific feature that will have strong value for businesses social media marketing campaigns. The View Tweets button now visible on the Discover page will allow users to see who has tweeted, retweeted and responded to others in relation to a piece of content. Businesses could can see how their content is driving engagement. LinkedIn announced a similar move this week in terms of joining content and social media marketing. The professional connection network revealed the acquisition of SlideShare, a web content sharing platform, in hopes of providing both companies and users the ability to show off content they have created. For marketers, posting slideshows, white papers and other content that demonstrates niche authority could help lure potential employees as well as prospects directly through the social network, Brafton reported. Social media marketing, in general, is an effective way for businesses to improve site traffic, conversions and visibility. However, Brafton reported this week that many companies are not effectively measuring their campaigns. The PulsePoint Group found that 27 percent of companies are relying on intuition to demonstrate the value of their social strategy, while 28 percent don't measure their social campaigns at all. As is the case with any form of marketing, companies need to know what's working and what isn't. Looking ahead to next week, Google Penguin will reach the two-week mark come Thursday. At this point, the fallout from the algorithm has not been particularly well publicized, but we could see some more insight on the adjustment as it grows older. We'll just have to wait and see.

Companies looking for SEO skills, outsourcing may have the answer
May 4th 2012, 19:48

SEO skills are among the most sought-after traits of new employees for companies.

A report from Wanted Analytics found that SEO skills are among the most frequently sought by employees in a number of fields. As the web, search specifically, becomes increasingly popular, companies are actively trying to adjust their website content and other material to ensure that it stands out in search rankings. According to Wanted, there were 24 percent more job listings with SEO knowledge and skills as a requirement in March 2012 than there were in 2011. Moreover, most of the positions were for technical or marketing capacities, which are both becoming more pervasive in non-traditional companies. Aside from greater demand for SEO professionals, other new media marketing skills are increasingly important. For example, experience in Google Analytics and other web metrics used to assess the value of different marketing material and inform later decisions is important for businesses of all kinds. Content analytics are largely based on the success of SEO campaigns. Finding employees who can analyze data to create valuable SEO and content marketing strategies can be difficult for some. However, turning to third-party agencies that can handle the creation and assessment of these campaigns could help organizations struggling to find the right mix in one employee. Brafton recently reported that 70 percent of companies using some form of content marketing will outsource at least one aspect of their campaign moving forward. With 87 percent of organizations using website content to improve their web presence, turning to an agency with experience in the field may help campaigns stand out more effectively.

Google News gets fresher, more visual with new updates
May 4th 2012, 18:49

Google News received some new features recently aimed at making it more visually appealing and fresher.

On Thursday, Google News announced in its blog that it has made updates to its SERPs to place a greater focus on visual content and provide the freshest updates to users. Adding a real-time coverage page will help users find the most relevant information regarding a news story they're paying attention to. As the news cycle continues its 24-hour lifecycle, finding current, updated content is important. The option will make it easier to ensure that an article contains updates. Moreover, Google+ integration has come a step further for Google News users. Now, those logged-in to their accounts will see comments their followers have made on news topics they see in SERPs. Making content consumption more social can help websites drive traffic and interest when articles are shared by Google+ users. Much like Twitter, those using content marketing can share articles or blog posts on Google+ to drum up interest for their site. Additionally, placing a greater focus on visual content will help those with relevant images attract readers. Moreover, the move is in line with recent changes to Google+ that gave visual content more real estate on users' Google+ accounts. Brafton reported that Google's social network made these changes to bring it in line with expectations of web users for a visually appealing interface for their social browsing. Making news content more visually attractive and providing the most fresh information can help Goolgle news draw more traffic and remain relevant. Moreover, as Brafton recently reported, 61 percent of web users access news content every day.

Chrome top browser among those active on social media

Google Chrome has become increasingly popular among the socially-connected web audience.

According to data from Shareaholic, Google's Chrome browser was the most popular among users who accessed content shared with Shareaholic's tools. While this is a fairly limited subset of the internet, it demonstrates that Chrome has become increasingly popular among socially focused web users. The numbers demonstrate that 29.13 percent of site traffic in April came from Gooogle Chrome users. This represents an increase of 0.28 percent over March's 28.85 percent. April was the second consecutive month that Chrome ranked first on Shareaholic's numbers. For marketers, SEO campaigns should focus on Google algorithms due to Chrome's growth. Internet Explorer was second with 24.14 percent, which was a 0.45 percent decrease from last month. Moreover, Mozilla Firefox dropped 0.5 percent in April to 23.49 percent of site traffic. Looking back to 2011, Chrome has picked up 7.76 percent, according to Shareaholic. Internet Explorer is down 8.74 percent and Firefox has fallen by 6.81 percent. More good news for Google came with Android's browser accounting for 3.40 percent in April 2012. Last April, minimal traffic from the sites Shareaholic measured came from the operating system's browser. Brafton recently reported that Google has integrated Chrome's desktop browser with a mobile app that will allow users to access their recent tabs, search and bookmarks on their Android devices.

Studies show tablets becoming in-demand devices for businesses, consumers
May 4th 2012, 17:08

Apple's iPad is still the leader, but new entrants into the tablet market are driving its growth.

A report from Yahoo found that tablets are quickly becoming the preferred devices for a number of tasks typically associated with desktop or laptop PCs. While more users consume news or entertainment-related content on their mobile devices, sales for tablets continue to rise and will do so steadily through at least 2017, according to a report from NPD DisplaySearch. Yahoo's study suggests that consumers are using their tablets to access website content throughout the day. Whether it's the 91 percent that said their iPad or other device is the tool they use to browse the web access articles and blog content before going to bed, or the increasing amount that prefers a tablet to television, the reach of news articles grows as more people use tablets. According to NPD, there were approximately 82 million tablets in use in the U.S. in 2011. By 2017, the company expects 424.9 million handsets to be used regularly by Americans. In the next two years, NPD expects the number to top out at 184.2 million, based on current growth and demand figures. Apple's iPad remains the best seller in the tablet market, but it's likely that handsets from other companies, running a number of operating systems, will become more popular moving forward. Already, the Amazon Kindle Fire, which uses Google's Android, has accounted for growth in the market. "So far in this relatively young product category, the tablet PC market has been dominated by Apple," Richard Shim, NPD DisplaySearch senior analyst, said in a relase. "However, as the market matures, and competitors become better attuned to consumer preferences … we expect the landscape to change dramatically, giving consumers more choices, which will drive demand for more devices." Brafton recently reported that Amazon's handset accounts for more than half of all tablets running on Android. Despite only being released in November, the sleek 7-inch device has attracted consumers looking for an easy way to access website content and other items on the web. Moreover, NPD found that the Kindle Fire's value as a high-end e-reader attracted a greater audience than most Android-powered devices. As a result of its greater capability, companies using content marketing campaigns for SEO can target Kindle fire users with news articles and blog posts, as it's increasingly used for search. According to Yahoo, the utility of the device has shifted its role for many users, as tablets are no longer used just for reading on the train or picking up a new bestseller. Fifteen percent of consumers said they would give up their car for an entire year before sacrificing their tablet. Similarly, families with tablets in the household are finding instant access to the internet and engaging website content has made it the second most fought over device in the household, behind laptops and desktops. Brafton recently reported that iPad deployments are becoming more common in businesses as well with the device accounting for 97 percent of activations in workplaces throughout the U.S. Morever, a separate Brafton article found that Apple's iOS accounts for substantial mobile search activity, which could help B2B marketers leveraging SEO and content marketing to drive site traffic and conversions. With 70 percent of all B2B buyers saying that they turn to search engines to conduct research on purchase decisions, maintaining a strong presence on search could help businesses attract prospects using iPads as their main gateway to the web.

Brafton: LinkedIn acquires SlideShare, users can ‘discover people through content’

LinkedIn acquires SlideShare, users can 'discover people through content'
May 4th 2012, 14:43

LinkedIn has acquired SlideShare to make its network better for content sharing.

On Thursday, LinkedIn took to its blog to announce the acquisition of SlideShare, a web content sharing tool. According to Deep Nishar, senior vice president of products and user experience at LinkedIn, and SlideShare have collaborated before to allow professionals using the social network to share content on the site. Now, greater integration will allow LinkedIn account holders to share presentations and other content they've produced. While content marketing is often tied to SEO for businesses, LinkedIn has essentially made content marketing a professional networking tool as well. Users can share different items they've created that demonstrate their own expertise in a field. For companies, however, the move brings a whole new element to both content marketing and social media marketing. Again, the SEO benefits are likely minimal. However, companies can share content, such as presentations or white papers, that they've created more seamlessly with the addition of SlideShare to LinkedIn. When prospects, potential employees or existing customers browse their LinkedIn pages, they'll see new content shared on the site. Nishar did not elaborate on a potential roll out for full SlideShare capability as part of Linkedin use. Currently, SlideShare users can access their accounts with any noticeable changes, and the extent to which the acquisition will change SlideShare is not known. LinkedIn has upped its offerings in recent months to make its social media marketing capability more valuable for consumers and businesses using the platform. Brafton highlighted a new follow tool in February that will allow users to keep track of companies on LinkedIn.

Brafton: Online ads struggling to resonate, shift to web marketing could yield better ROI

Online ads struggling to resonate, shift to web marketing could yield better ROI
May 4th 2012, 15:36

Businesses using display ads may be struggling to convert prospects, and content marketing may be the solution.

A report from AYTM Market Research found that just 16 percent of consumers believe online display ads are an effective medium for advertising products or services. Moreover, less than 14 percent of respondents said they usually pay attention to ads they see on the web. With many consumers reporting dissatisfaction with aggressive website display or pop-up ads, companies can use internet marketing to appeal to their target audience. Shifting from overt advertising to marketing through information and interaction can help businesses improve the appeal of their products and services. Sixty-six percent of respondents said that they regularly read news websites and an additional 51.8 percent access blogs. Pairing marketing with information through news content marketing can help companies avoid spending money on display advertising campaigns that may be ignored by prospects. Focusing on using website content to drive search standing will result in prospects organically finding information and navigating through the conversion funnel without feeling overwhelmed by ads. With so many relying on news sites and blogs, using content as target marketing can help inform these news-hungry readers, while boosting their interest in and products and services as well. Brafton recently reported that news has become one of the most popular forms of content on the web. Whether it's from their smartphones, tablets or other devices, more than 60 percent of Americans access news content on the web every day.
